Quick Tips For Hanging Holiday Lights

holiday_lights

Outdoor holiday lighting brings holiday cheer to your home and neighborhood. Here are some quick tips for decorating your home.

• Plan before you start.

• Design your light display and decide which bushes, trees, roof-lines,etc. will have lights.

• Measure carefully to determine how many strands of lights you will need. (Note: for bushes and trees, a good rule of thumb is 100 lights for every 18 inches of green).

• Pull out all of your old lighting and make sure the lights and cords are in good shape.

• Determine how many additional strands you will need for the display. Make sure that everything you buy is rated for outdoor use.

• Gather all of the supplies needed for installation, including a ladder, extension cords, timers, etc.

• Work from the top to the bottom to hang the lights using clips (never nails!) to attach them.

• Remember - never connect more than 3 strands of lights together.

SAVE BIG!!!! How To Make Your Windows Energy Efficient

Did you know that 10 to 25 percent of your home's central heat can be lost through inefficient windows? There are several steps you can take as a homeowner to help prevent this heat loss in the winter. Below you will find tips to help increase the energy efficiency of your current windows and how to maximize energy efficiency when looking to buy new replacement windows.

Current Windows - Maximize energy efficiency with these tips.

  • Install insulated storm windows to your existing window to reduce heat loss 25 to 50% (depending on the size and type).
  • Install a window film to help reduce heat loss in the winter by sealing your windows.
  • During daylight hours in the winter, open all the drapes and blinds on south-facing windows to maximize the passive solar heat coming from the sun.
  • During the night, close all the window blinds and drapes to reduce heat loss through the windows.
  • Re-caulk around all windows to help seal your window frames and prevent air leakage.
Replacement Windows - Added efficiency will help you save on utilities.
  • Replace single-pane windows with double-pane or triple-pane windows for maximum efficiency.
  • Select windows that are gas filled (Argon, Krypton) and have low-emissivity (low-e) coatings.
  • Install insulating foam around replacement windows during installation.
  • Choose a replacement window with the highest thermal performance values and lowest air infiltration ratings.
